i think i have won this debate that paper tape is weaker,,,, as he says...........

In a tensile test, paper tape is actually stronger before it breaks, < HOWS IT STRONGER IF IT BREAKS???

compared to fiberglass tape, which will stretch (but not break). < MUST BE STRONGER IT DOSNT BREAK JUST STRETCHES WOOP! 20 years experiance to 6 and whos right?
your reading your letter from USG with rose coloured glasses

Both will do nasty things under duress, The master taper who taught me stated, never go back and look at your work after 7 years, you will cry. All tape jobs will hair line crack over time. The big difference is the paper tape will conceal the hair line crack, well the mesh will not.

Will paper tape break free, oh yes it will, but lets examine truss lift (pre engineered/manufactured trusses). I have seen the paper tape ALMOST pop from the ceilings and walls as it lifts from the trusses. But come spring, when the trusses settle back down, the tape will settle back to it's original forum, without cracking,,,,,will mesh do that,,,,never.

Bottom line is, as you seem to think, b/c the mesh will stretch, you seem to think the hotmud will stretch with it.....NOT.

It's all about movement young buck, we don't make cars or buildings stronger by buffing them up, we allow for movement. Look at the principals behind the sky scraper, expansion joints, spanning the belt in stair wells, silent beam floor joist, the solution to truss lift, avoiding joints above windows and doors........

paper tape with the PROPER compound accepts movement better and conceals cracking better. Well the mesh may have better movement qualities , the brittle hotmud does not.

So when your 7th year comes in this trade, and you start going back to fix all those hair line cracks, don't forget to brag how well the mesh tape is holding.

31 years in this trade, used mesh twice, one gave me a bad name with a GC, the other with a friend, which cost me money....never again
