I do 1st coat Joint Filler with a 10 inch taping knife. 2nd coat Joint cement with 10" box either side of middle of tape tidied up with a 12" blade so joint is 20" wide. 3rd coat 12" box right down the middle. In all honesty I could leave it after the 2nd coat, but I like to put that extra mil or so on to ensure good coverage of the tape.

A swipe either side of the tape with a 10 or 12 inch box, then a crown down the middle. Just taper it as wide as you have to until you cant notice the join. Until the board manufacturers sort this out at production level and produce a 4 way bevelled board then this will always be an ugly join, especially on a staircase.
