Yellow pages and yell.com
September is the print deadline for the Edinburgh Yellow Pages. I've been approached a couple of times over the last 4 weeks or so about advertising in both the big yellow book and yell.com and I wanted to know if any members have had success in terms of serious ROI? Have you made a lot of money and new clients from advertising there?
I considered it last year and a rep came out on site. The defining moment was when I was turned off by his cheesy hard sell tactics and I asked him to leave. I know people who have advertised in both and most enquiries are junk calls from numbskulls and timewasters.
Am I correct in thinking Yellow Pages has had its day and the internet search engine is now king?Your messages are really important to us

Ames,
Tough one to call, seems every year we always get just enough work from yellow pages rto warrant spending the ridiculous anmmounts they demand for a soppy badlt placed ad.
Guess the thing to judge is did you get anyone last year mention your ad?? if not tyhen maybe not worth the paper its printed on!
Nice way of judging it for one last time - get a freephone number and divert all calls to whatever number you were goin to print in thepages - that way you get an online monitoring user panel to track how many calls per year come through the book - i think they were offering this service to us last year , maybe eorth a go?
But yes the net is growing and getting stronger and stronger, trying to find balance between 'digital' and 'stone age' marketing is tough!

AAAAAAAAAAAA A1 Ames Tapers and plastering or AAAAAAAAA ABC plumbing and heating etc have you ever checked the smallprint on these adverts in an effort to get listed first?. You would be beter spending your money in the pub, cos you would get more work from it

Wow they dont mess around. I put a free advert on Vivastreet and Gumtree earlier this afternoon and within an hour I had 2 calls from Yell offering a buy now, pay next year deal and an enquiry from an SEO company.

Think I picked you up wrong Herbert. Do you mean "worth it to advertise"?
Its around £800 for a beermat sized advert and another £400 to £500 to get a priority listing with a linkback to your site on yell. A plumber I know swears by it, a plasterer and painter I know both swear AT it. All depends on where your ad is placed and I dont think thats guaranteed before it goes to print. Tapeinator made a great point about the AAAAA cheat in a vain attempt to get on the first page. You can actually see the smallprint in one of the corners on the larger adverts.
Errr. I think I'll stick to pushing my product online. Its cheaper, and I can track my referrals and bounce rate. If an advertising campaign doesnt work, you cant do anything about it once its distributed but you can make tweaks to an online version anytime you like.Your messages are really important to us
