yellowing gloss
Hi I dont decorate as a job but do my own at home(i hate it)i have used dulux trade gloss,b and q trade gloss and crown gloss and they have all gone very yellow within months, does anyone know the best (easiest) way to cover it ? i was thinking of using water based as it boasts non yellowing (i know its S**t and does not shine but i dont want to do it again).

Hi mcfc, oil based gloss tends to yellow after a while and you're right in saying the water based stuff boasts that it doesnt but the water based stuff IS sh*t to work with and will prob take another coat to cover and still doesn't look as good as a fresh oil based gloss finish. Persimmon Homes made our contractor change to water based u/c and gloss last year because of that very same problem, even though they had to shell out the cost of an additional coat. But within a few months they changed back- says it all really.
this is your dilemma mcfc, oil based gloss= better finish but more yellowing, Vs water based gloss= inferior finish but No yellowing
For me, oil based every time

dont waste your time/money on oil based paint, if you want a white finish thats going to last use waterbased gloss it stays white forever! same as using varnish. if you dont like the way the varnish/woodwork darkens..... its the varnish that darkens not the timber. if you didnt want that rich colour youd go for the waterbased varnish
stay looking like new timber forever!
give it a couple of coats of universal primer big g. and a couple of coats of waterbased white glossyoul see the difference. oil based starts to yellow within a week of being applied.

it wont stay whiter any longer big g.
undercoat is a body. it builds up the paint quicker. 2 coats is good coverage.
white oilbased gloss - baisically just clear varnish........ with white pigment. not much body thats why you need the undercoat.
waterbased gloss is good stuff if you need it to dry verry quick. and for use for example (in your own home) where you wouldnt want the odor of oilbased. but the downfall is the poor coverage maybe need 2 - 3 extra coats and itl still look kinda crap. some dry and can be re-coated within an hour.
oilbased gloss is alot more solid but yellows + takes upto 16hours to dry + heavy odor.
