How to tape question

hi mate can you give me a run down on how to tape, when you bed the paper tape do you cover it straight away with the access mud is this classed as 1stt coat

I have worked with people who used what you just described as a first coat, but taped edges sometimes showed through. I just picked off the snots with a long handled broad knife and left a wee bit, waited until it dried then put 3 boxes over the top of it.
