Internal corners
Hi Fellas,
New here! I'm a handyman who has taken an interest in taping and jointing over the past few years, but don't get to practise as much as i'd like. I hope you can help me with internal corners.
I've read many of the posts on here, done internet searches and watched many youtube vids but i'm still not entirely clear on how they should be done. Machines are not an option for me at the minute, but after i've mastered hand taping then i'd certainly be interested in the likes of corner flusher.
One of the problems i have is that i know you want to keep the corner as square as possible (in other words the tape and compound as thin as possible) otherwise when you come to paint it you’ll get a ridge in the paint when you try to roll close to the corner.
So it would be better to only have 2 coats – the bedding coat and one topcoat? Or if you were to use three coats you’d want to be feathering it out further – to say 6 inches?
So if you hold a 10 inch knife from the centre of the corner out to the wall what would you guys say is an acceptable gap to have between the blade and the wall as obviously there must a small roundedness to the corner yet not enough to cause the ridge in the paint that I mentioned
I’ve read that some consider the corner trowel to be amatuerish, is this true? It’s just that the method of doing one side of a corner at a time would be far too time consuming, especially on small jobs.
Sorry for the long post, but if someone could answer those questions with possibly a detailed description of their method that would be great. I really want to get this nailed as it’s getting on my nerves at this stage
Thanks for your help

Hi, welcome to the forum. I only do 2 coats on internals, both with a 3" corner finisher. There is no need to flush out to 6". If you look at all the corner flushers/ finishers that are on the market, they vary between 2" and 4" so no taper would flush out to 6". Yes its true us tapers regard the corner trowel as amatuerish, you wouldnt see some1 taping a 3bed house with a corner trowel but I know plenty of guys who bring one to do, say, a porch or small alteration rather than getting their mud pump, corner box and finisher dirty, so if its only a small job then go ahead and use the corner trowel. If you're serious about getting into taping then this is the 1st stage of the learning curve so you will eventually get fed up with the corner trowel and invest in some real tools!
Good luck

Really appreciate your replies fellas and i apologise for taking so long to say thanks - flat out at the minute.
Yeah i saw that spoon vid - wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry.
Until i get the flusher i think i just need to practice, but every time i think it through and imagine myself doing a perfect corner needing next to no sanding, i try out my new slightly adjusted technique and it doesn't turn out the way i wanted.
Could be down to subtle things like the angle of the wings on the corner trowel (i have them bent back a bit, but maybe too much or not far enough), and maybe my knives (gyproc) are a bit too stiff - i know the purdy knives for example are very flexible.
If i was standing right beside one of you watching carefully while you do a corner all my questions would probably be answered but the youtube vids don't really go into the fine detail that i need to get my corners perfect.
Thanks again

Banjo's do take a bit of getting used to, and not everyone gets on with them, I didn't, you might
It depends how much you are looking to spend.
Cheapest option is a Tar brush on a stick (or corner roller http://www.belmoretools.co.uk/acatal...r_Rollers.html )to put the mud in the internal, then a BTE 3" flusher and handle, simple to use
The BTE Compound Tube with applicator and a flusher and handle is next, this set up is what I started with.
This is a good quick set up, but costs (a fair bit more)

Well im a Taper and I use a corner trowel when the jobs too small for the machines, after all a flusher is only a trowel on a stick. I find the best way is to bed the tape on first and give it time to dry then to finnish I use a 6" and apply a coat to either side feathering the outsid edges and not worrying about the corner, then I take the corner trowel/twitcher and run it down the corner to finnish.

Cheers, considering the above i could use a corner roller to apply mud, apply tape and then use a flusher? Whould this apply for the 2ns and 3rd coat (corner roller then bigget flusher? )
Also is there a taping tool that just does taping instead of measuring cutting folding applying?
As the mentioned in the post after is a flusher not a corner trowel on a long rod?
Many thanks again.

You only need 2 coats on internals, yes you could do that on both coats
Yes a flusher is a corner trowel on a stick,
if you use a compound tube you can also use a direct flusher which will mud and flush in one go for the 2nd coat
A banjo is one tool the other is a Bazooka, which would set you back anywhere between £500 and £1000, plus the pump and gooseneck
Youtube is a great place to watch all this, type in Better Than Ever, also Bazooka, Banjo, Corner Box

Sorry to bump this thread up but was thinking if the 3 step system used in the better then ever tool demo video
Step 1
- tape flats using super taper and go over with taping knife
Step two
- Lay tape with super taper in internals
- Direct flusher applicator with mid tube
Step 3
- Sand down with pole sander all tapes
anlther question is were does this leave externals and should i purchase and external applicator head + is there an external flusher?
Many thanks guys.
