Why can't guests post and is this a good idea?

guest comments
why would guests need to comment...
..If they have questions, how would they be answered if they were anonymous 'Guest's? It seems to me that anonymity is only of benefit to those who wish to comment or spam without the responsibility of identity. One strength of forums like this is that we are held to some account because we are known, so more often than not we considered our opinions before they were submitted. That said, I have occasionally wished I'd commented anonymously because in retrospect I answered a post without careful reading and missed the point.
So I say, guests needn't be able to comment. There is enough anonymity even for registered users. I don't think I could be tracked if I 'd thought about which email I registered under.

We could make it possible for guests to post but I saw another good example of why not to during the night. It only needs one bad apple to rot the whole forum so the registration process gives the impression they are at least giving some small commitment by having a contactable email address and they can be held accountable for any comments they make.
Good comment. We use IP numbers to spot suspicious or spam accounts at registration, unfortunately we do not have someone keeping watch 24 hours a day and some make it through to post their spam on the forum... this gives me something to do when I have a spare half hour.
I still want to hear you guys opinions, maybe someone can convince me otherwise?

Seen a chat box on a couple of forums - doesn't allow urls to be posted - so could be good for gust who wants to test the knowledge of others before becoming a full time forum junkie!!

I never explained myself properly but it seems Belmoreboys on my bus! A chatroom of sorts never crossed my mind but I think thats a great idea. I thought I had proposed, (too much cider last night.. hic) a designated area where people thinking about joining in can dip their toe in the water first as some guest users are maybe anxious to comment due to a fear of being ridiculed. I'm a member of another 2 forums and the first posts were definitely the hardest. Chatrooms good for me, anyone else agree?

register first cos you will lose control of your forum very quick and it will be difficult to keep order.
Jesus loves you........ everyone else thinks you're an arsehole.

Leave it as it is otherwise the forum will be abused. We all had to register to create a comment and I would go one step further if it was my forum. I would moderate all members before they are allowed to post anything. Ihave already saw some spam posts before they got deleted from the forum and understand you cant keep watch all the time. A chatrooms cool, when are we getting one?

Looking at the poll results I can see a definite pattern developing that shows we all clearly give a f**k about the harmony and future of our wee taping community.
I am converted, well done guys!

I may look at moderating new user accounts before anyone can post if spamming becomes any worse and a chatroom will be added. Guests can look but not touch, majority rules and we're (mostly) all agreed aren't we?

Unfortunately I don't have eyes in the back of my head and another 8 spam accounts were set up in the last week. New members will now be moderated before being allowed to join.
