Default What do you think the best materials and hand tools on the market are?

    drywallschool.com

    Hi all,
I'm a newbie to the taping and jointing website and this is my first post. I've searched the forums and found many different opinions on the varying products used in the industry. So, what products (please name the brand and product) do you like or dislike and why?

Any comments on the following would be appreciated-

    * Mud Pans, Taping & Jointing Knifes
    * Jointing Filler & Compounds (Preferences for Skim Coating Stages 1, 2 & 3)
    * Jointing Tapes (Paper and Fiber/Scrim)

I Cant see past British Gypsum tbh.
Their joint filler is spot on, as is the cement.
Not sure the make of fiba tape we use, Thistle maybe. Paper tape and metal is BG although BG's metal tape is not great, I prefer Wondertex- a bit more rigid.
Some sites we do specify Knauf compounds- there's a few threads on that subject, make up your own mind!!!
Knives, I generally stick to Marshalltown or Hyde.
Never used a mud pan though.

Welcome to the forum by the way

Thanks E.K. for starting the feedback to my question and welcoming me to the forum.

I have never used the dry powder Knauf filler products but have used the ready mix cement a few times and didn't find it that bad. Hearing what the forum users say about the other Knauf fast setting compounds I will avoid them until a few people have said something good about them here.

I read a few reviews recently from some folks who had bought new Marshalltown knives and they said they were nothing like the quality of the older ones- definitely made in China on the cheap.

Yeah, I've not seem many in Scotland using mud pans. I don't know if that the same in other parts of the UK.

What's folks experience with the G-Tec Joint Filler Xtra (90mins) and the G-Tec Smartmix Xtra (ready mix)?

I was also reading on here about the Speedline Readymix Joint Compound and that it had been changing from one product to another in 2013 "4 times in the last 6 months - it was lafarge - then we think knauf and then..." "Sheetrock Blue Tub" etc. just with Speedline branded tub. Did they settle on a mix/product and what's it like to use?

Anyone ever used Fixman's metal corner tape (50mm width). What's the verdict?

Smartmix xtra is good stuff. A bit expensive though but I still get some if I only need 1 or 2 as the buckets are handy.
If you need a lot the Freemans from Marcus/Belmore is a much better bet. Lovely stuff too.

Did you know that quick set USG easy sand 90 can be delayed as much as 45 minutes when you use dishwashing liquid about a 1/4 cup per 4.5 gallon bucket. The trick is to put dishwashing liquid in the water. Mix it around in the water first then add the quick set 90min. Powder. Mix with drill in reverse at medium speed and watch how much smoother the mud gets. Just like butter.

Another thing I learned in Minnesota was after corner bead has been crimped and pounded on , tape the bead from inside half on the bead and the other to the drywall. So now tape Even with Mesh Tape straight up and down . Then coat 10" mud ,Let Dry ,12"mud coat Finish ,Let Dry touch-up and sand. You know how mud cracks or you see mud break off. You won't see any of that .This makes corners almost as solid as plaster and Damn hard as hell to pull This Corner Away From the Drywall Underneath. Just Try This Process. You Won't Be Sorry!!!
