Hiya is this problem similar to the xbox red ring of death, heard of people wrapping there consoles in towels and turning them on for half an hour to reset the chips, but not recommending it.

what a pisser, same happened to mine 3 times,,red light of death.im sure it was on watchdog moisture in the chipset they said think they stuck it in some sort of oven to get the moisture out then put something over the chipset to stop it happening again..

A mate of mine had a similar problem. It must have been a hard drive failure because his install data, game saves and maybe his trophies were lost on return.

A wee tip. A PS3 is like PC hardware, so watch out for static electricity frying the chips.

Good link that, and bookmarked because my PS3 is well out of warranty.

I`ve got the bit between the teeth now and we all know how tight us tapers are when it come to paying someone to fix anything, anyway i have a heat gun now and its very close to me hand, i have also ordered some arctic silver ceramique thermal compound 3.14 from ebay (god knows what it is) that i have to rub on the back of the main chips, so good bye static precautions and hello new slimline ps3..

Im gonna give it a go just coz i`m tight and if i can repair it for 3.14 i will sleep well that night.

    P.S.
you would not believe the amount of dust that was inside the console,

    P.P.S
anyone want to buy a cheap ps3 that erm er, my mate selling,
